"A Christmas without snow, tinsel, or
tree,
at the edge of a map-and land- corseted sea..."
J.Brodsky
"Lagoon"
(translated by Antony Hecht)
I
was very impressed by description of winter Venice. Winter
for us, Russians, is characterized by snow, but there is
rarely snowing in Venice. Winter in Venice means a fog and
"alta aqua" ("high water"). At that
time peoples walk on especial planked footways, and a fog
is so dense, that every walker leaves after him "a
corridor" in the fog, which keeps almost during half
an hour.
